彼岸と此岸

私にとっての「大統領」の思い出といえば、上野アメ横の煮込みなんですが、こんなニュースが目に入って驚くやら呆れるやら。

The White House has installed a new presidential portrait gallery.
While the new "Presidential Walk of Fame" features portraits of all the presidents in gilded frames, former President Biden's portrait is replaced with a picture of an autopen.


ホワイトハウスは新たな大統領肖像画ギャラリーを設置しました。
新しい「大統領のウォーク・オブ・フェーム」には金縁の額に入った歴代大統領の肖像画が飾られていますが、バイデン前大統領の肖像画はオートペンの写真に置き換えられています。

でnewの修飾する名詞は通例は「ギャラリー」。newを取った場合の通例は「歴代大統領の肖像画ギャラリー」。ここでの形容詞presidential は「大統領の」の意味だが、(X)「新しい大統領」 などと意味を読み取ってはダメ。

そうは言っても、現大統領があの大統領だけに、１人の肖像画を何枚も何枚も並べて飾り悦に入っている、というイメージも浮かんでしまうのが問題ではあります。

この最後の一文で、いかにも米語だな、という表現が使われているんですけど気がつきましたか？

  • former presidents on both sides of the aisle

これは、

  • （米国の二大政党である）共和党と民主党の両党の歴代大統領

という意味。

  • aisle

は本来は「教会内の区画・エリア」を指すもので、

a 〘建築〙 (教会堂で身廊 (nave) と平行し, 列柱などで区切られた)側廊, アイル.

MW’s のWeb版を見てみると、名詞のaisleに次の定義と用例があります。

この1aの(2)の語義が該当しますね。

  • 議会において対立する政党を分ける通路として見なされるもの

という比喩です。

この用法は二大政党で維持展開成立している議会には等しく当てはまるような気がしますが、実際には米国に限られているようです。

『英語表現辞典』（第二版、研究社、1985年）には、米英の差が少し書かれていますが、懸案の用法には言及無し。

イギリスでは 「教会堂の側廊」ないしは 「教会の座席の通路」の意でしか用いられないが、アメリカでは, これらの意味のほかに、 劇場・教室・列車などの 「通路」 にもこの語を適用できる :

1980年代の米国の学習用辞書WBDにはこの語義用法の記述はありません。

ほぼほぼ米語法といえるこの “aisle” ですが、英国語法というか、旧来型というか、よりgeneralな文脈で使われる成句が、名詞の “fence” を用いた、

  • on … side of the fence

です。
OALDでは英英和でも米語法でのaisleを注で示しています。

米語のように二大政党に限らず、もっとgeneralに、論争する双方の立場を仕切る、隔てるものとしてfenceを用いる表現です。

米語の辞書NOADにも次のように成句として取り上げられています。

side of the fence
either of the opposing positions involved in a conflict: whatever side of the fence you are on, the issue is here to stay.

DL訳：　対立する両陣営のどちらか：あなたがどちら側に立とうと、この問題は今後も続くだろう。

この “fence” が「対立する､意見、信念、価値観の異なる２つの側を隔てるもの」という意味で用いられる例は、大学入試の読解素材では既に登場しています。ピンポイントで設問にならないと、商品たる学参や問題集には反映されないので、話題にならないだけだと思います。
例によって、出題校名などは載せませんが、出典はつけておきます。

「政治ネタ」で現れる頻度が高そうなチャンクですから、TIMEコーパスで、どのような現れ方かを概観してみましょう。

CLをざっくり。

これを見る限りでは、結構昔から使われている表現であることが見て取れますが、いかんせん、コーパスで拾えている実数が少ないので、初出や、使用頻度の変化が大きくなった時代区分などは、もっと精密に調べないとわかりません。

ベンチマークのCOCAで見ておきましょう。

spoken (話し言葉) での頻度が高いことがわかります。

GLOWBEは10年以上前のデータだけれど、これを見る限りでは、ほぼほぼ米語法であることに頷けるでしょう。

では、ニュース英語NOWではどうか？
名詞に後続する環境での検索ではエラーが出てしまいましたので、 “on … side(s)” から

both sidesで。

これだけでも、結構見えてくることでしょう。
続いて、either side。ヒット数が激減。

実例は少ないながらも、共通する環境要因を感じ取ることは可能です。
教材ではほぼスルーで、辞書や語法書でもまだ､表面的にしか扱えていない「現代の英語表現」で、しかも、ほぼ米文化圏に限定されるものを見てきました。
確かに、テストでこの表現を問うことは難しいでしょうが、少ないながらも「彼ら」は日常使っている表現である、という知識は持っておくに越したことはないように思います。

  • 「テストにでるものしか学ばない」

という態度を継承すべき文化とは思いたくないので。
