ここでの

  • 50something
  • 20something

はハイフン無しでしかも1語として綴られていることを確認して下さい。

旧来型の表記では、通例、 “50-something” や “20-something” とハイフンを付けて複合語としていたものです。
G6では次のような項目を立てています。

  • something

連結要素 ｟略式｠ …歳代の（人） 《◆20-90の概数の後につける； 複数形でも用いられる》
forty-something 40歳代の
thirty-somethings 30歳代の人々.

Wisdom英和では次のように、somethingの下位項目に入れています。

3b (話) [人名･数詞の後に添えて] (あいまいにしたりわからない場合に)…何とか, …かいくらか

(「50代の人々」など複数形はfifty-somethingsとなる).

O-LEX英和でも同様に、somethingの下位項目です。

I think she's forty-something. 彼女は40何歳かだと思う
（◆ That band is popular among twenty-somethings.（あのバンドは20代の人々の間で人気がある）のように名詞的にも用いる）

「年代」の表し方としては、

  • in one’s 年代

として、

  • in my twenties
  • in their fifties

などという表現・表記がお馴染でしょうが、高校までの「教科書」や「教材」で､次のように明示的に扱われることは余り多くはない印象です。

〜歳代
1. 「10歳代」（厳密には13〜19歳）はteensといいます。13 (thirteen) から19 (nineteen) までの数の綴りがすべてteenで終わるからです。
2. 「20歳代」はtwentiesといいます。20 (twenty) から29 (twenty-nine) まで、そのすべての数がtwentyで始まっているからです。ただ、twentiesは1920年代を表すことがありますので、注意して下さい。
3. 「30歳代」「40歳代」…「90歳代」も同様です。
4. これらの表現は、例文中の in her teens のように、所有格がつくことがほとんどです。

古くて申し訳ないけれども、私が「参考」にしてきた、

  • 市川繁治郎　『英語の語法　表現篇　第１巻　数と量』（研究社、1967年）

でも、「年代」に関しては、この “in one’s -ties” で表すのが普通、としています。(pp.32-35)
この表現形式は明快である反面、「…歳代の人」を表そうとすると、後置修飾に頼らざるを得ないという制約があります。
上掲書で市川が補足として示している(p. 35)のは、

40代の人 a quadragenarian
50代の人 a quinquagenarian
60代の人　 a sexagenarian
（中略）
100歳以上の人 a centenarian

といった「ラテン系」の名詞ですが、20代、30代に対応する名詞がなく、日常の使用頻度は当時も今も少ないでしょうから、自分の英文ライティング､という観点では余り役には立ちませんでした。
“vicenarian” を20歳代に使うとしているサイトがあり、Wiktionaryでもエントリーがあります（vicenarian - Wiktionary, the free dictionary）が、MW’s のWebでの一般用にも未収録です。

Ngram Viewerでざっくりと。どういうわけか、a sexagenarianだけ比較的高頻度。

これに対して、冒頭で取り上げた “something” とともに使った表現は、前置で形容詞的にも、単独で名詞的にも用いられるところが「便利」なのだと思っています。

2025年9月22日追記：
大修館のジーニアス系のG6 (2022年）には次の用例がありますが、somethingの項ではなく、mugの項にあります。

  • At a table ten or so twenty-something guys were drinking mugs of beer.
  • テーブルでは10人ほどの20代の若者がジョッキでビールを飲んでいた

"ten or so" は人数の概数、"twenty-something" は年齢の概数を表していることを確認。
この用例と全く同じ用例が、G大 (2001年） の「用例プラス」の複数の囲みにもあるのですが、G大では "something" の項にも配されています。この用例は G5 (2014年）までは "-something" の項の「デジタルプラス」にもあり、引き継がれていましたが、G6では "something" は勿論 "-something" の項からも辿れなくなってしまいました。この辺りはG6でも上手く引き継いで欲しかったところです。

問題は表記。

Ogilvie, a 50-something veteran of theatre, opera and drama teaching, had a natural way with actors. Behind the scenes footage in an Australian TV documentary, logically called The Making Of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, shows him patiently yet firmly talking a large supporting cast of young actors through their scenes. Calm and softly spoken, it’s possible that his sensibility provided an artistic counterpoint to Miller’s taste for the outrageous.

オギルビーは、50代の演劇、オペラ、演劇指導のベテランで、俳優たちとの接し方が自然でした。オーストラリアのテレビドキュメンタリー『メイキング・オブ・マッドマックス／サンダードーム』に収められた舞台裏の映像では、多くの若手俳優たちに対し、忍耐強くかつしっかりと、それぞれのシーンの説明をしている様子が映っています。落ち着いた物腰と柔らかな話し方から、彼の感性がミラーの過激な好みに対して芸術的な対照をなしていた可能性があります。

20代から60代までざっくりと示しましたが、この辺りが、旧来型のバリエーションといえるでしょう。

それに対して、ハイフン無し1語表記の例を見ていきましょう。
2020年のPeople誌から、米国フィギュアスケートのJason Brown選手の特集記事。

That's right, it's a Christian skateboarding movie! We usually try and meet art where it is but in this case we do spend most of the episode laughing about how terrible "Hardflip" is. Hoo boy.

「30代」「40代」の2つともハイフン無しで一語で書いていますから､そういう文化を生きている人ということでしょう。

There's something to be said for city life, but it doesn't work for everyone.

一語の表記ということは､その語は「綴れる」ということですよね？

使用頻度が比較的高い、「20代」「30代」は、英和辞書にもエントリーがあります。

まで載せている辞書は少ないですね。

私が違和感を覚えた「ハイフン無しの一語」は、この「綴り字の数字部分」を算用数字で表記したもの、ということになります。

今回取り上げている語法でも、ハイフンありの典型例と、ハイフン無しの一語＝本来一語の綴り字の数字部分を算用数字で表記したもの、とを見てきたわけですが、もう一つのパターンもあるだろうな、という予想は付くと思います。
はい、確かにそのパターンも実際に使われているのです。
ハイフンなしの半角スペース空き、つまり分かち書きで数詞とsomething(s)を別語扱いするものです。

先ほどの英和辞典の検索結果でいえば、

  • Wisdomの thirty something
  • G大の forty something

が該当します。

G大から。

この語法での、数詞部分を算用数字で表記したもの、ということになるでしょう。

本当に、「言う言わない」の問題は難しいのですが、ハイフンの有無も悩ましい。
金子稔氏の大昔のことばを思い起こしています。

私の個人的な印象であるが、本来あるべきハイフンが落ちてしまっている例より、なくてもよいところにハイフンを用いる傾向のほうが著しいように思う。英語を読んでいて、そのことがとても気になるのである。必要なものをうっかり省略してしまうことはよくありそうなことだが、不要なものをわざわざ加えるというのはどうしてなのであろうか。それが正しいと思っているからに違いない。(p. 94)

この「金子本」から学んだことは多いのですが、そこから既に28年。
「最近の傾向」もイマドキになっているわけですから、それについて行くべく日々丁寧に英語表現に向き合ってきました。
私の英語の地平も少しは拡がり、その土壌も豊かなものとなっていますように。
