坂本花織さんといい、りくりゅうペアといい、競技者としてのピークで最高の結果を残して引退するというのは稀なことです。
りくりゅうペアの場合は、世界選手権の欠場で予感はしていましたが、やはりショックは大きいですね。
朝、出講先に向かう電車の中で落涙。対面の乗客から怪訝な目で見られていました。
いや、ホントにもう帰ろうかと思ったくらいで、その後、ちゃんと授業を終えた自分を褒めてあげたいくらいです。
- やり切ったという気持ちでいっぱいで、悔いはありません。
という二人の今後を暖かく見守ります。
さて、
前回の記事は、ツイッターで北烏山さんにRTしてもらったおかげか、アクセス数が急増。
ありがたいことです。
以下のtechnical, technicallyについての観察、たいへん勉強になります。翻訳物で、訳文のなかで浮いているがゆえに、ああ、これはtechnicallyを訳したのだな、と英語を読まなくても推察できちゃうケースを何度も見てきました。
記事本編でも書いているし、普段からも繰り返し言っていることですが、過度の一般化で「ドヤ顔」するのは勘弁して欲しいのですよね。
technicallyを「技術的に」と訳してしまうと、上手くいかないからといって、何でもかんでも「厳密に言えば」とか「理屈の上では」という訳語を、それこそ「杓子定規に」当て嵌めても、やはり上手くいかないことが出てきますから。
というのが良いと思いますよ。
今日は、そんな「気になる語法」のひとつというよりは、むしろ「語法の扱い」の方で、気になることを。
比較的近年の大学入試問題に、こんな英文を完成させるものがありました。
( Each ) person has to take turns doing the dishes, ( unless ) they cooked dinner.
- 各人が順番に皿洗いをしなければなりません。ただし夕食を作った人は除きます。
とでもいうような意味になるでしょうか。
eachは単数扱い、というだけで済ませずに、each自体に、everyとは違って「順繰りで抜けがなく」、という意味があることを覚えておきたいものです。また、unlessは唯一の例外を導くもの、と覚えていれば容易かと。
私が気にしているのは、ここで使われている
の扱いです。
最近の入試対策教材の多くが、「行為」「活動」が続く際に “-ing形” のみを示しているが気になります。
『インサイト』(啓林館、2024年)は、pp.280-281で、次の英文例を収録。
At the party, we took turns telling funny stories.
パーティで､私たちは順番におもしろい話をした。
解説では、
- take turns (in) doing 「交代で〜する、順番に〜する」
というまとめ方。
『アップグレード』（数研出版、2024年）は、pp.324-325で
We drove into New York, taking turns at the wheel.
私たちは交代で運転して､ニューヨークまで車で行った。
解説では
- take turns at the wheel 「交代で運転する」。 taking turns (at) cooking [driving] などのように動名詞を使うこともできる。
とあり、まとめの項目としては
- take turns (at [in] A [V-ing]) 「交代で (A[V])する」
という情報処理の負荷の高い書き方をしています。
『読むため 書くための 英文法ハンドブック』（旺文社、2025年）では、p.212で、
We take turns (in) walking our dog.
私たちは交代で犬の散歩をしている。
を収録。解説では、
- 多くの場合、in は省略されます。この turnは「順番」の意味です。
とあります。
『スクランブル英文法・語法』（第5版、旺文社、2025年）では、pp. 240-241で
Since there was only one washing machine, we had no choice but to take turns using it.
洗濯機が1台しかなかったので、交代で使わざるを得なかった。
を収録。
解説では
- take turns (at [in]) doing 「交代で〜する」
のパターンを示しています。
古い教材ではどうだったかというと、
西尾 孝『実戦英単語活用事典』（日本英語教育協会、1981年）では、 p.544で
Mary and her sister take turns helping their mother each night.
メアリーと妹は毎夜母を順番に手伝う
を収録。
『クラウン受験英語辞典』（三省堂、2000年）では、p.1391に、
The old cottage had only one bed, so we all took turns sleeping in it.
その古い山荘には寝台がひとつしかなかったので、我々は交替でそこに寝た。
という用例が収録されていますが、成句の見出しに続くパターンの表示では、
take turns ＜頻出＞交替でする ＜at…を／doing, to do …するのを＞
とあり、不定詞も続けられることを示しています。
同様に不定詞も示しているのが、『大学入試 英熟語最前線 1515』（研究社、2024年）。p. 25に
take turns (in [at] ) doing / take turns to do 交替で…する
という記述はあるのですが、用例は動名詞も不定詞も、ひとつもありません。
辞書の用例／記述にも当たってみましょう。
Chambers Universal Learners Dictionary (1980年)
take turns (of two or more people) to do something one after the other, not at the same time:
- We took turns at pushing the pram.
- They took turns to look after the baby.
と不定詞の例を収録。
同じChambersでも Essential (1995年)になると、
People take turns or take it in turns to do something when they do it one after the other:
- We took turns looking after him.
- The students take it in turns to open the discussion.
と成句も用例も様変わり。ここでは、
も同じ項目に収録していますが､そちらの用例では不定詞が続いています。
Cowie時代のOxfordのイディオム辞典 (1993年)では、
- take (it in) turns (to do sth)
という見出しで次のような定義とパターンと用例を示しています。不定詞のみです。
share a task, duty etc
- We take it in turns, once a fortnight, my brother and me, to give the place a thorough going over. TC
- If you can’t agree, you’ll have to take turns to sleep in the top bunk. Now, no more argument.
現行のOALDはどのように扱っているかというと、
take turns (in something/to do something)
British English also take it in turns
if people take turns or take it in turns to do something, they do it one after the other to make sure it is done fairly
- The male and female birds take turns in sitting on the eggs.
- We take it in turns to do the housework.
- The kids took turns on the swing.
とあり、 ＜-in + 名詞（相当語句）＞ か ＜不定詞＞かというパターン。用例も -ing形が直接ではなく、前置詞inのあるものが採られています。
COBUILDの初版 (1987年)では、次の通り。
If two or more people take turns to do something or take it in turns to do something, they do it one after the other, especially because this is fair.
- You can take turns paying for evening functions.
- The protesters are taking it in turns to chain themselves to the perimeter fence.
- They took turns at the same typewriter.
定義では不定詞ですが、最初の用例は -ing形を収録。
これが現行版では、B2表記で、
If two or more people take turns to do something, or in British English take it in turns to do something, they do it one after the other several times, rather than doing it together.
- We took turns to drive the car.
とあっさりしたものですが、 “one after the other several times” という頻度の記述が増えました。
用例は不定詞のみを示しています。
LDOCEの現行版（第6版、2014年）は
take turns (又はtake it in turns)英国
if two or more people take turns doing work, using something etc, they do it one after the other, for example in order to share the work or play fairly:
- You’ll have to take turns on the swing.

- The students were taking turns reading aloud.
take turns in doing something英国:
- We took turns in pushing the bike along.

動作・行為が続く場合のパターンは、定義文でも使われている＜-ing形＞に加えて、＜in + -ing形＞と＜不定詞＞が立項されています。
同じLongmanでもコロケーション辞典 (2013年)では、
take turns (also take it in turns BrE)(= with each person giving the others a chance to do something)
- My mum and dad take it in turns to do the cooking.
とtake it in turns の不定詞の例のみを示しています。
米語の辞書も見ておきましょう。
今は無きマクミランのMED。

この用例でのUKという提示の仕方を見る限りでは、所謂米用法では -ing形で、英用法では不定詞、ということかと。
そろそろ学習英和に移りましょうか。
WisdomもG6もパターンとしては不定詞も示していますが、不定詞の例も示して、用法の注記をしているのはG6。
O-LEX （第３版、2024年）は現時点で最新の学習英和ですが、記述は悩ましいものです。
パターンの表示と用例が一致していません。

示されたパターンには -ing形がないのに、用例は -ing形という…。
ちょっと時系列を遡りますが、『英和イディオム完全対訳辞典』（朝日出版社、2003年）では、
take turns ((in/with/at) doing/ with [on] something) (with someone)
「（〜を）（人と）交替でやる、代わりばんこにやる、順番にやる、分担して交代でする」（おもに英）では、take turns to doと、不定詞もとる。
というパターンと訳語を示しています。この段階で英用法に言及しているので、文用例では、不定詞の例は示されません。-ing形の絡む用例のみ抜粋。
- Let’s take turns driving. （交代で運転しようよ）
- He and I take turns in teaching this course. （この講座は彼と私が交代で教えている）
- My roommate and I take turns at solving the hard math problems. （ルームメイトと私は難しい数学の問題を分担して代わるがわる解く）

不定詞は英文化圏 (GB/AU/NZ/IN/HK/ZA) で見られることがわかります。

圧倒的に -ing形です。
英
不定詞の頻度が高い結びつきもあります。
高頻度とは言えないまでも、不定詞を使う地域／文化圏は存在するので、テストでの解答をひとつに限定することは避けるべきだし、指導する場合にも配慮は必要だろうと思います。
次のような不定詞文化圏を無視するような作問・出題は感心しません。
The children took turns [ ] the heavy baggage all the way for their grandmother.
ア carrying イ carried ウ for carrying エ carry
NOWコーパスでの検索だと、最新の英語の実態に触れることができますが、このtake turnsに関して言えば、ことばにするのが憚られるような表現例が上位にくるので、今回は避けています。
