私の英訳例では、 “their weakness or awkwardness” って書いていましたけどこれって、文の形に解凍したら “they are weak or awkward” とか、語義を抽出したら、 “they repeatedly show something weak in them or something awkward about them” みたいな感じになるでしょ?
There’s some theories about what is it about being outdoors that makes us feel so a lot I’ve been and when you look at the brain there’s a thing called attention restoration theory which is there’s part of the brain when we’re working on a problem that’s really really difficult, like a math problem or a mechanical problem, it really taxes our brain and we can be drained from that because we’re so laser-focused on that problem. And yet when we out in nature, we’re not focusing on solving a particular problem, but we’re out enjoying the colors, enjoying the textures, enjoying the wind and enjoying the flowers. At that point brain has an opportunity to rest and to restore and rejuvenate, so in that capacity, we feel really relaxed, and that’s part of what a neuroscientist, if they are thinking about and doing studies, ought to show that in that state we are fully relaxed and that may be part of why we feel so alive when we’re in nature.
, which call on ...”
(B) Attention restoration theory looks at the two main types of attention that humans employ: directed and undirected attention. Directed attention requires us to focus on a specific task and block any distractions that may interfere with it. For instance, when we are working on a math problem, or engrossed in reading a literary passage or in assembling or repairing an intricate mechanical object, our brains are totally dedicated to the task at hand, requiring our direct undivided attention. After we complete the task we often feel mentally fatigued or drained. Conversely, when we are outdoors, we may enjoy observing patterns or a sunset, clouds, flowers, leaves or a beautiful meadow, which call on our undirected attention.
1. Putting down my newspaper, I walked over to the window.
2. I sat reading some old letters.
3. I saw her standing there.
4. Not knowing what to do, I telephoned the police.(どうしていいか分からず、私は警察に電話した)
5. It rained all the time(,) completely ruining our holiday.
6. Most insects are able to survive with little water, making them an ideal alternative food for locations with severe water shortages. (2018
7. I would like to conclude my remarks, wishing that this Conference will have fruitful results, making for a safer world.
※ make for (≒contribute to)
Digital technology also brings potential problems. There are threats to privacy: digital systems can gather and communicate large amounts of information about people, often without their knowledge. There are environmental issues: devices can become unusable quickly, requiring huge investments of energy and materials to replace them. There are also socioeconomic issues: richer people and richer societies will always have greater access to the new technologies on which we may all one day depend.
B.
We are mesmerized by the exactness we perceive in the universe, and we seek to copy its grandness here on earth. History for us is a continuing exercise in engineering. The earth is like a giant hardware store, made up of all sorts of parts that need to be assembled together into a functioning system. Our job is never done. There are always new designs to consider and new jobs to be performed, all requiring the constant rearrangement of parts and the enlargement of processes. Progress then is “geared” toward the perfection of the machine.
C.
For young Japanese today, the keitai (mobile phone) is a universal communication device, personal organizer, contact list, timepiece, and individually decorated amulet to the harmony of connectedness, the locus of the fragile web of personal relationships with a virtual community, requiring constant maintenance. Neglected keitai don’t die, of course, but to lose one’s keitai is to virtually lose one’s identity, to cease to exist within the mediated world.
when we are working on a math problem, or engrossed in reading a literary passage or in assembling or repairing an intricate mechanical object, our brains are totally dedicated to the task at hand, requiring our direct undivided attention.
, where we have to focus or unite our attention to the task at hand
Require who to direct what to what?"
Using our senses to touch, see or smell in natural settings doesn’t require a task-specific, problem-solving approach. Instead we can enjoy our experience in nature and be rejuvenated by taking in the sights and sounds at a relaxed pace. Undirected attention is easy to summon and maintain and leads to reduced stress and anxiety.

the task at hand
, which call on ...”
”, requiring...” と”, which call on ...”
Self-confidence, if carried too far, can and will cause offense to your fellows. Instead of criticizing their weakness or awkwardness, keep a skeptical view even on what you believe is right. You will, then, learn to accept your own flaws as well as theirs’.
However, if you carry it too far, you will soon find yourself in a position where you offend your fellows. Only then can you develop an attitude of tolerance, realizing that your beliefs, as well as others, are always open to doubt to a certain extent.
I have been a big fan of music.I was such a struggling student that I bought a single or an album with what little money I had saved and would listen to them repeatedly until they were worn out. That made me remember the title of each song and every single word in them.
Now I earn enough myself to buy a lot of pieces of music on the Internet. But I have never listened to many of them afterward, only piling up CDs or storing downloaded tunes. Sometimes I do not even realize I already have one until I buy the same title and bring it home. I still love music a lot, but my love for what I have seems to have changed. I have learned this lesson the hard way---if you have less, you would appreciate it more.
