Is seeing believing?

厳しい残暑でヘロヘロということもあり、ニュース英語の引用RTも頻度が激減しています。
相変わらず、「現実味のcould」と「asの前景後景」は普及定着にはほど遠いですが、めげずに投稿し続けています。

#asの前景後景
後景のas節はmakeで現在形で舞台設定の説明。
前景の主節は伝達文でthatのないthat節中でthey have seen a dramatic spike in ridershipと急増の表現の部分に焦点が当てられることになる。出来事や事件、変化が生じる､出現するとそれは目に見えるようになるので動詞はsee。時制も確認。

この140字紹介＆詳解の解説でも触れた動詞seeの用法も丁寧な処理が必要です。
ということで、今日の気になる語法は「動詞のsee」になります。

上述のseeの用法・語義として、

  • 出来事や事件、変化が生じる､出現するとそれは目に見えるようになる。

というのは我ながらコンパクトにまとめられたのではないかと。

以下､類例。

記事本文から倍数表現を。
Unlike virtually all other developed countries, where such fatalities declined during the last decade, the U.S. has seen an increase of over 30 percent. Today, an American is more than twice as likely as a citizen of France or Canada to die in a crash.


過去10年間にこのような死亡事故が減少したほぼ全ての他の先進国とは異なり、アメリカでは30％以上も増加している。今日、アメリカ人が事故で死亡する確率は、フランスやカナダの国民の2倍以上である。

見出しでの省略は本文で確認。名詞句は慣れが必要。不定冠詞のaの省略は半角2スペース分。

これほど巨大な蛾は、アイルランドでの記録では、1997年を最後にこれまで7件しかない。

学習用辞書や中級以上の英英辞典であればこの辺りの用例はきちんと示されているのですが、主語の選択､動詞の選択、時制の選択などの注記はあまり多くはありません。

人主語で事件や出来事、変化の経験・体験。現在完了形の単純形が多い。プラスの変化にもマイナスの変化にも用いられます。

We've seen [There's been] a growth in the number of elderly people needing care.
介護を必要とする老人の数が増えている (W)

We have seen job growth in a number of areas.
いくつかの地域で雇用の増大が見られた (Oxford コロケーション)

We have seen a massive growth in the number of students excluded from school in the UK since 1991.

主語はモノ（国､地域、会社などの組織体）。単純な増減だけでなく、成果達成や変化などを現在完了で表すことが多い。

主語に「時」「期間」「季節」「時代」などを取り、多くは現在完了形。

seeの知覚認識ではなく、存在文で変化を表す例。

とまあ、この辺りまでは､良い教材にも､良い辞書にもたいていは書いてあることです。

私が気にしているのは、「現在進行形」で変化に言及する例。

COBUILDとOALDにはこのタイプの用例があります。

O-LEXでは「兆し」系の用例。実態・実体ではなく、そのsign(s)を目にしている､という表現になっています。

そしてここからが本日のハイライト。
私が最近一番気になっている、主語が人ではなく、モノになる例です。
2024年の9月の記事。

A rare deadly virus is spreading in the northeastern US. Another virus has spike 800% in South America. Both are mosquito-borne illnesses, which are seeing a spike around the globe.


希少な致死性ウイルスが米国北東部で蔓延している。別のウイルスは南米で800％の急増。どちらも蚊が媒介する病気で、世界中で急増している。

ここでの see [are seeing] の主語は、地域ではなく、その前段のboth illnessesとでもいう「モノ」であることを確認。

2024年の8月の記事。

Holidaymakers have been warned the West Nile virus is seeing a surge in cases in southern Spain, sparking protests from locals this week.

ここでの see [is seeing] の主語はスペイン南部という地域ではなく、the West Nile virusでモノ。さらに、何が増加するのか、と言う単位としてin casesが使われていることを確認。

コロナ禍の2020年の記事で､変化するモノ自体が主語のseeが見られます。

重症急性呼吸器症候群コロナウイルス2（SARS-CoV-2）による新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）が最近発生し、世界中で感染者が急増している。

この例でも、see [is seeing] の主語は COVID-19のoutbreakであって、人でも、国や地域でも時でもないことを確認。さらに、具体的に増加するものをin casesで表している。上述の西ナイルウイルスの記事参照。


動詞seeが「事件、出来事、変化」を表す用法で、主語に変化するモノ自体がくるのは稀。

上述の、モノ主語でも「変化するモノ」が主語となるseeの例は、この上位３０までに入ってこられない程度のヒット数です。
私が見聞きした範囲では、主語になる名詞は「疾病」「感染症」「ウイルス」などが多い印象です。
現時点では、まだ誤用なのか、個人の癖レベルの表現なのか、比較的新しい用法の出現を目の当たりにしているところなのかは定かではありません。ただ、その表現形式を選んでしまう心理はわからないでもありません。
今後もこの現象に注目しておこうと思います。

ここでは see [is seeing] の目的語が a rise [a surge / an increase /a spike]などの名詞ではなく、所謂「知覚動詞」の動詞型で用いられるように、see +名詞+ -ing形となっていて、その名詞のところが "many people" と数量の多さを表しています。しかもそれが "for the first time" ということで､「変化」の「出現」で､この「増加」が、実質「事件である」ということを示しています。

ボブ・ディランの曲 "The Times They Are A-Changin' "の冒頭の一節は、私たちを取り巻く上昇し続けるインフレを見て最初に思い浮かぶ言葉だろう！
生活費はここ数ヶ月で急上昇している。ピュー・リサーチ・センターが最近実施した調査では、アメリカ人はインフレを今日の米国が直面する最大の問題と見ている！

ここでは因果関係ではなく、純粋に主語になっている "the cost of living" そのものが a meteoric rise (急上昇）を体現していることを示しています。冒頭で、ボブ・ディランの曲の歌詞を引き合いに出して「変化」を強調していることも再確認。

この「生活費（高騰）」の例を、上述の「疾病・感染症」の例と考え合わせると、seeの用法の地平が少しひらけて､見通しが利くようになってきましたかね。
