高２は『…誤典』からの語法確認。接続詞if とwhetherとthat。名詞節・副詞節の解説もほどほどに、教師から与えられた限られた用例から、生徒がどれだけ自分の学びを拡げたり深めたりできるか、学級文庫を活用しての作業を３０分ほど。最後の１０分で、お互いの学びから学ぶ。
高１オーラルはまず、『短単』の音読から。/w/, /f/, -th- の発音を中心に。windやweatherでは /w/ を強調すればいいのだが、flowerでは/w/音がないので、発音と綴り字の関係は意外に難しいのだ。
「…リスニングの旅」は栃木と群馬。質問の英文のsentence repetitionが重要。音読の中に、日本語のキュー→英語へというのも入れてみた。この日は７限にもう一コマ英語があったので、６月の歌を先取り。私の授業では定番の Stevie Wonder。
閑話休題。
大学入試でも時折見られる ”no sooner … than …” の thanは何と何を比較しているのか気になったことはないだろうか？たとえば、こんな用例。
- He had no sooner said it than he realized his mistake.
- No sooner was his head on the pillow than he was asleep.（以上『ロイヤル英和』、旺文社、1990年）
- I had no sooner left home than it began to rain. （『高校生の英文法』、三省堂、1984年）
- No sooner had he closed his eyes than he fell asleep. （COBUILD Usage, 1990）
生徒に質問をして、センスのある回答を得ることは稀である。高校生の場合、soonの語義の理解が日本語訳を通して行われていることで、本質的な理解から離れてしまっていることと、thanという語が前置詞としても接続詞としても用いられるために、thanに後続する節の内部構造がつかみにくいことも一因だろう。
thanに後続する節中での省略については、『英作文要覧』（開拓社、1998年）のp.146, に詳しい。英文のみ引用する。
- Cats are more independent than dogs (are).
- Dog's noses are much acuter than human noses (are).
- My brother is taller than I (am)
- Sales tax in New York is higher than that in Japan (is).
- This white puppy seems to be growing more rapidly than the other ones (do).
- It has turned hotter this summer than (it was) last summer.
- Last year terrorist activities were worse than (they were) any of the previous five years.
- He is more famous as an artist than (he is ) as a scientist.
soonは言ってみれば、in a short period of time; a short time after something else のような意味であるから、「基準時からの経過時間の短さ」を示す副詞である。そこまでを理解している者でも、冒頭で上げた例文での基準時をthan 以下の節と勘違いしている場合が多い。この最初の例文では、saying itと realizing his mistakeという二つの行為が行われた時点とは別の第三の時点が基準時として隠れており、その基準時からの経過時間の短さを比べているとでも考えるのが妥当ではないか。「saying itまでの経過時間の短さと、realizing his mistakeまでの経過時間の短さを比べた場合に、前者の方がより短いといっても、その差はゼロで、ゼロ分だけ短いと言われてもそれを短いなぁとは感じにくいでしょ」とでもいう情緒的・主観的な意味合いを帯びる表現になる。この文の発話者の意図は「言ったそばから間違いに気づいた」ということであり、このno の否定が原級のsoonの語義に及び、late「早くない；遅い」のように反意となる、というのは、二つの行為の起こった順序を入れ替えられない以上は誤読と言えるのではないか。
前置詞として用いられ、than以下が基準となる次のような例との区別が重要と思われる。
- Advances are provided no sooner than 5 business days before the actual departure date.
- Participants are asked to arrive at their designated campus no sooner than an (1) hour and no later than fifteen (15) minutes before the tournament begins.
それを踏まえて、まずは正しい理解が必要なのは次のような比較級のsoonerが正しく用いられた例だろう。
- Cats are also independent-minded, with wills of their own. Unlike Pavlov’s dogs, which repeat actions or press buttons so that they get a reward, many cats would sooner fall asleep than be involved in such experiments. Some of these cats may be judged as not very bright, or lazy, but arguably they are only exerting their independence and refusing to cooperate.
- Corn has other merits as well. No other grain converts energy from the sun more efficiently than corn. While a few varieties may take a year to mature, most can be harvested in fewer than 120 days, even sooner in warm climates.
比較は奥が深い。細部に神は宿る。
