１１月７日（日） 三省堂さんの主催でのオンラインセミナー終了しました。
47名のご受講とのこと。誠にありがとうございます。
アンケート集計結果も頂戴しました。
今回はzoom環境での画面共有で、私のiPad からのwifi接続が原因なのか、画面のチラつきがずっと続いて、ご迷惑をおかけしました。
それにも関わらず、内容に関しては概ね好評で迎えていただき深謝。
Basic / Standard とも見本本が送られるのは11月下旬になろうかと思います。是非、実物をお手にとってご検討いただければと。
今回の新刊、『チャンクで積み上げ英作文』（三省堂）は、所謂「学校採択専用」の教材ですので、一般の書店では購入できません。また、大変申し訳有りませんが、予備校や塾で教えていらっしゃる方も購入することができません。中学校、高等学校、中等教育学校、高専などの学校教員の方が対象で、その方たちが学校での教材採用に当っての見本本、ということで入手可能かと思います。
今後の採択結果次第で、「店売品」としての可能性も出てくるかと期待はしていますが、こればっかりは何とも言えませんので、何卒ご理解のほど。
私の主催するオンラインセミナーも年内に開催する予定ですが、そこでは、今回の三省堂さん主催のセミナーのように、教材紙面や解答解説のpdfをお見せして、一つ一つ解説ということではなく、
- 「チャンクを積み上げる」指導法の意義
- 四角化ドリルの「背景／理念」
- 名詞句を中心としたチャンクの類型の捉え方
- 文未満の「文法」の整備から「文」へ、文を超えた「文法」の視点から「文」へ
などを中心とした内容で、その中で一部、新刊をご紹介、というもので、昨シーズン開催していた「名詞句を教えるなら…」のセミナーのバージョンアップ版という位置づけになるかと思います。
今後のSNSでの告知に注目いただければ幸いです。
以下は、現在の教材研究の備忘録代わりに。
慶應義塾大学・2013年の過去問の、空所補充の適語選択問題から。空初補充した上で抜粋。
Jun Suzuki (JS): As the old saying goes, nothing in life is certain but death and taxes. Today we are speaking with economist Mary Potter about her thoughts on the proposed increase of Japan's consumption tax rate. So Mary, are you for or against the proposed tax hike?
Mary Potter (MP): Well, it really comes down to a question of austerity or stimulus : “To spend or not to spend, that is the question.” We don't want Japan to become another Greece, of course, and yet we also don't want to smother the economy prematurely if a little fuel can get the fires of industry and commerce burning again.
（中略）
JS: And of course we also have to think about the impact of a tax increase on individuals and families.
MP: That’s right. People have to live. They need the basic necessities of life. Is a consumption tax the fairest way to go? As you probably know, many countries work (around) this problem by taxing daily necessities at a lower rate than other commodities.
ここに引いた最後の一文の空所補充で、某教材では、( ) の部分は、work around が正解で、「問題などにうまく対処する」という意味になるとしているが、これはwork around という表現の解説としては不十分で、これを正答として求める出題そのものとしてもやや問題ありだろうと思う。
マクミランの辞書は、
(work around someone/something) to deal successfully with a person or problem that might prevent you from achieving your aim
という定義と
- A skilled craftsman can work around these difficulties.
という用例を載せているがこの「定義」がどの程度正確に現代英語の実態を反映しているか、という問題である。
OALDでの定義では、
to find a way of working that avoids a particular problem without actually solving the problem
とあり、「問題を回避する」ことに焦点が当たっている。
用例は以下の通り。
- The lack of test data is a problem, but we’ve found a way to work around that.
Cambridge の句動詞辞典の定義は
to organize an activity so that things that could cause problems do not prevent you from doing what you want to do
で、用例はやはり「回避」の要素が強いもの。
- They know how to work around the import restrictions.
- I need to take the car into the garage some time today, but I’ll work around it somehow.
MW’s Essential Learnersでは、以下の定義と用例で「回避」。
to organize things or proceed in a way that avoids (something, such as a problem)
- We’ll just have to find a way to work around the problem.
LDOCEでは、
to arrange or organize something so that you avoid problems that may stop you from doing something
という定義で、次の用例。
- John won’t be here on the 15th so we’ll have to work round that.
American Heritage の句動詞辞典(2005年)は、 work around を収録。
To achieve a goal in such a way as to avoid some difficulty
という定義に続いて、次の用例を示していて、示唆的である。
- Can we work around the problem, or do we have to solve it?
古いもので、Oxford の句動詞辞典(1993年)や Longman の句動詞辞典 (1983年) では、＜work around to 名詞＞の句動詞のみを収録していて、今回の出題のような＜work around +名詞＞は扱われていない。
Oxford work around to
(informal) eventually tackle (sth) some time after one has begun talking. O: problem, topic, discussion
Longman work round to
to reach (something or doing something) gradually
『英和イディオム完全対訳辞典』（朝日出版社、2003年）では work around to のみ収録。
語義は「〜に取りかかろうとしていろいろと回り道する」など、「回避」系の意味。
コンピュータ関連の用語で、名詞の workaround （= プログラムやシステムの問題の（特に本質的でなく一時しのぎの）解決策）（O-LEX英和） を考えてみると、「回避」とか「その場凌ぎ」のような意味合いがwork around という句動詞の担う意味の中心ではないか、というのが私の理解。
そのような「語義」を分かっていて、この表現を正答だと判断できる受験生は少ないのではないか。
句動詞に限らず、慣用表現を解答として求める出題には、その「語義」が本当に一意に決まるのか慎重に検討して欲しいと願うばかりである。
