今日の高２は、ケネディ就任演説の最後のパート。
前回までに進んだところをbuzzで個人練習したのちに重ね読み。イントネーションに対する注意を喚起して、精聴で確認し再度斉唱。新たな範囲を精聴、口パク、重ね読み、個人練習で一段落。精聴を経て、個々の音を全体で練習。個人で再度練習した後、全文を通して重ね読み。
三省堂でかつて出ていた『新クラウン英文解釈』（河村重治郎・吉川美夫・吉川道夫共著、1969年；詳しくは過去ログ参照→http://d.hatena.ne.jp/tmrowing/20070111）に収録されていた、ケネディの文章を私が朗読。
この時代がかった、埃を被った教材に収録されている英文は、「英語で書いてあっても読んでみたいと思える内容・表現の文章」であるか、「同じ内容・表現であっても、この人の言葉なら英語でも読みたい、と思える人」なのである。
クラスには昨今のTOEICや英検などで使われる文章で、試験を終えてなお、「あの、2007年の２級の第２回の文章、何回読んでも心が洗われるよね」、とか「今日、ふとしたときに、最後の一節が浮かんできたんだ」ということがあるかを尋ねた。試験対策は必要。でも、それだけではダメ。スキルを磨くこと、「できること」を「よりよくできる」ようにすることも確かに大切。でも、スキルだって言葉に依存しているのだから。「いいこというなあ」、と思えるためには、いい言葉・いい表現であることが必要条件だろう。
次回は、ビデオ収録。少人数クラスなので、一人一人の暗誦箇所を分担し、全体で１つのスピーチになるように、”democratic negotiation” を求めておいた。全員に音源は配ってあるので、あとは自助努力と一致団結。「団結、重要です！」と前任校の生徒はよく看破していたなあ…。
教材研究と参考資料を兼ねて、文献をいくつか。
音源を用意したのは、有名な演説のうち、さらにクライマックスのみで、 ”In the long history of the world, ….”からなので、それ以前の原文も用意。ここでは、冒頭の２段落のみを紹介。
- We observe today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedom, symbolizing an end as well as a beginning, signifying renewal as well as change. For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago. / The world is very different now, for man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe --- the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God. （In Our Own Words, Extraordinary Speeches of the American Century, Washington Square Press,1999）
この本の面白いのは、1900年から、10年ごとに、関連した、あるいは相反する、対照的な内容や主題、人材のスピーチを併せて収録しているという点だろう。このケネディ就任演説の前にセットで収録されているのは、1961年の1月17日に行われた、Dwight D. Eisenhowerの farewell address。これが、意外にも、と言っては失礼だが、ぐっと来るいいスピーチなのだ。最初の段落のみ引いておく。
- My fellow Americans, three days from now, after half a century in the service of our country, I shall lay down the responsibilities of office as, in traditional and solemn ceremony, the authority of the presidency is vested in my successor. This evening I come to you with a message of leave taking and farewell, and to share a few final thoughts with you, my countrymen ….
この節の冒頭で紹介される、1953年４月の彼の言葉も繰り返し読みたいものである。
- Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in that final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The world in arms is not spending its money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.
今週が記念日だったので、タイミングを逸した感もあるが、来月２月は、キング牧師のスピーチとなる。
普通科は命令文。再入門でも導入は導入か。命令文とはいうものの、「指示」「依頼」「助言」「禁止」など用途は多様であることを指摘。問題を解いたあとに、
- Hold the line. / Take care. / Have a nice day. / Take it easy.
など日常でよく用いられる命令文の表現をいくつか板書し解説。
一頃話題となった、Freeze. のエピソードなども紹介。次回は、接続詞へ。
放課後は、ミーティングで今後のスケジュール確認と、練習の指示。
エルゴで12km。久々に人が揃ったが記録はやや低調。週末の合宿まで、朝、昼と自主練の必要性を感じたことでしょう。途中、加速が鈍くシャカシャカしていたので、私もまん中のエルゴで低レートで強く漕いで模範を示したのだが、４０秒台だと１分ももたない。情けなや。鍛えないと。
帰宅後シブケンのブログを見ると、トレーニングメニューの話が出ていた。「ありがちな誤解」というのはよく分かる。メニューを組むのは本当に難しいものなのだ。
夕食後は『相棒』。
先週から続く話。劇場版公開まで、過去のシーズン、エピソードとの絡みが増えそうな予感。GWが待ち遠しい。もっとも、GWも本業三昧だろうから休みが取れる保証は全くないのだが…。
