Playtime

高1はalsoとtooの論理。

  • In the last 200 years, many kinds of animals have died out. People have killed animals for food. They have also killed animals for their horns or feathers. People have also destroyed animals’ homes when they built houses and factories. If animals can’t find a place to live, they die out. / Pollution is killing many animals, too. Rivers become dirty, and fish are poisoned. Birds that eat poisoned fish can’t lay healthy eggs. / We are killing ourselves, too. One World English Course 3, Lesson 8)

  • Language Play, Language Learning, Oxford, 1999

  • In the real world, people do a whole host of things, both trivial and significant, which one would not want to reproduce in a language class simply for that reason. It would seem more sensible, if one is to deal only in ‘real world’ target activities, to select those which are intrinsically educational, valuable, or enjoyable --- including telling stories and playing games. / In Task-Based language teaching, however, being ‘real’ is only one reason for taking target tasks as a starting-point. The other reasons are that they are ‘compatible with SLA theory’, and ‘provide a vehicle for the presentation of appropriate target language samples to learners’(*1), as well as the conversational interaction believed to be beneficial to acquisition (*2). (p. 156)

  • A good deal of contemporary language teaching, then, deliberately turns its attention away from language play, and focuses more or less exclusively upon simulation of the discourse of the ‘bulge’ --- in which students go about their daily business, motivated by external pressures, doing the things they will have to do in the language, and interacting with the people they have to negotiate their needs with along the way. This is of course what many of them are learning language for. Yet as an analysis of play demonstrates, it is not necessarily the case that the best way to equip them for these needs is to tackle them directly, any more than it is the best way for children to prepare for adult life by working rather than playing (whether with language or in general) or for adults to gain understanding of the complexities of social interaction by reading fact rather than fiction. (pp.158 -159)
