先日のエントリーで、”The Gift of the Magi” の副読本の英語表現比較に触れたのだが、試験も一段落したので、中間報告。
多読や「やさたく」がこれだけ普及して成果も出ているのだから、水を差すようなことをいわないでもらいたい、という向きもあるかも知れないが、最後まで読んで頂ければ、私の意図はわかろうというもの。
まず、原文を全部引くのは大変なのだけれど、まだ一度も読んだことのない方もいるだろうから、全文を読めるサイトを紹介。 (→http://www.online-literature.com/o_henry/1014/)
続いて３人のライターによるretoldのバージョン違いを以下に示す。
賢者その１
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. She had put it aside, one cent and then another and then another, in her careful buying of meat and other food. Della counted it three times. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.
There was nothing to do but fall on the bed and cry. So Della did.
While the lady of the home is slowly growing quieter, we can look at the home. Furnished rooms at a cost of eight dollars a week. There is little more to say about them.
In the hall below was a letter-box too small to hold a letter. There was an electric bell, but it could not make a sound. Also there was a name beside the door: “Mr. James Dillingham Young.”
When the name was placed there, Mr. James Dillingham Young was being paid thirty dollars a week. Now, when he was being paid only twenty dollars a week, the name seemed too long and important. It should perhaps have been “Mr. James D. young.” But when Mr. James Dillingham Young entered the furnished rooms, his name became very short indeed. Mrs. James Dillingham Young put her arms warmly about him and called him “Jim.” You have already met her. She is Della.
Della finished her crying and cleaned the marks of it from her face. She stood by the window and looked out with no interest. Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only one dollar and eighty-seven cents with which to buy Jim a gift. She had put aside as much as she could for months, with this result. Twenty dollars as week is not much. Everything had cost more than she had expected. It always happened like that.
Only one dollar and eighty-seven cents to buy a gift for Jim. Her Jim. She had had many happy hours planning something nice for him. Something nearly good enough. Something almost worth the honor of belonging to Jim.

賢者その２
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it in the smallest pieces of money - pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by negotiating with the men at the market who sold vegetables and meat. Negotiating until one's face burned with the silent knowledge of being poor. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.
There was clearly nothing to do but sit down and cry. So Della cried. Which led to the thought that life is made up of little cries and smiles, with more little cries than smiles.
Della finished her crying and dried her face. She stood by the window and looked out unhappily at a gray cat walking along a gray fence in a gray back yard. Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only one dollar and eighty-seven cents to buy her husband Jim a gift. She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result.
Jim earned twenty dollars a week, which does not go far. Expenses had been greater than she had expected. They always are. Many a happy hour she had spent planning to buy something nice for him. Something fine and rare -- something close to being worthy of the honor of belonging to Jim.

It was the day before Christmas. Della was worried. She wanted to buy a nice Christmas present for her husband Jim. But she had only one dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. It was not enough.
Della did not know what to do. So she sat down and started to cry. Jim and Della lived in a small apartment. It cost $8 a week. Jim earned only $20 a week. She saved money every month, but all she had was $1.87 to buy a present for Jim.
She wanted to buy something fine and rare.

どうですか？簡単な英語で書き換えられていれば良いというものではないでしょう？私なら、２番目のVOA バージョンを使うでしょうか。私が好きな、原文の、
- Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.
に当たる部分を反映できているのは、このバージョンくらいなので。物語を読んだ後、自分に残るのは「あらすじ」ではなく、「ことば」であって欲しいのだと思います。Rewriteしたのは、Karen Leggettさん。VOAではお馴染みのライターですね。高校など、学年で指定して副読本を読ませているところがあるかもしれませんが、少なくとも教材選定にあたる教員は、世間の評判や、巷の多読サイトでの評価に依存するのではなく、複数の候補を実際に、生徒の発達段階に照らして自分で読んでから課すべきでしょう。
朝は立哨から。LHRでは「紋切型」の文章について。高３は今後、志望理由書や小論文などいろいろ書くことを要求されると思うので。
高１は５分間音読等自主トレのあと、『Lの基礎を固める』。coldとcalled、boneとbornなどなど。
対話文の聞き取りという最後のタスクに繋がるような個々のドリルの取り組み方を説く。いちいちお膳立てしませんよ、というメッセージでもある。一期一会のつもりで聞きましょう。
教科書採択を睨んでだろうか、普段は現任校には関心がないだろうと思われる出版社がこの時期だけは営業に訪れる。
昼休みに、数研出版の営業の方が来校。
『Viewpoint』の音源がいかに酷いかという話しをしておく。年度途中であっても、語学教材として適切な水準で録音し直して、採択校にはパスワードを配り出版社のサイトからダウンロードで対応できるようにするのが筋だろう、と要望を出しておいた。
高３、高２と一コマずつ。
高３は「いい話」の最後まで進んで、決め所の書き直し案の検討。『耳読』でも扱われているので、そのバージョンも検討してみたい。
高２は、不定詞と時制のズレ完結。seem/ appear/ say/ report/ think/ believeなど。人主語とit主語での書き換え。この「時制のズレ」の考え方を動名詞でも適用することを指示。そこから、不定詞の持ち味、動名詞の持ち味を掘り下げる予定。
放課後は桐原書店の営業の方。
『フォレスト』のイラストの不備と、『現代を見る』での英文の適否、和訳というか読み取りの適否を問うておいた。『現代…』での和訳の気になる英文とはこちら。

の”bring water for their baths” をこの教材で用意されている全訳では、「入浴」で済ませているのだなぁ。入院患者の二人とも重病で、一人は肺から定期的に水を抜かなければならいし、もう一人は横を向けず上しか見られない寝たきりの状態なのですよ。普通そういう患者を浴槽にお湯を張って入浴させますか？しかも、そのお湯をわざわざ朝になってから看護師さんがせっせと運んできますか？大まかな意味を読んでいるだけで、誰もことばを読んでいないのではないかと訝しくもなります。”baths” と複数形になっている名詞に対する動詞を想起してみれば、他動詞の ”bath” または”bathe” まで辿れると思うのですがね。ちなみに、英和では『Ｇ大』 (大修館) でもbatheには、
- ＜人が＞(通例医療で)＜体の部分＞を水などに浸す、洗う; (英) bath
という語義が示されています。「入試英語」って書き換えが大好きっていうような印象があるのですが、こういうときにこそ、名詞と動詞の間で行ったり来たりできることが大事なのだと思います。入試の過去問を素材として教材を作る弊害がこういうところに現れるように思います。何しろ、オリジナル・原典がわからない以上、出題校がどのようにrewriteしたのかも不明なのですから。今回取り上げた、"bring water for their baths" も、この表現が本当に英語としても適切なものか、信頼が置けるのか、という思いは消えません。これが検定教科書だったら、必ず編集会議の段階で複数の「賢者」によって揉まれまくりますよね。
次年度の採択用教材見本を各社たくさん置いて行かれるのですが、私からのお願いはただ一つ。
- 良い英語で、良い教材を作って下さい。
