I was surprised at this form. 曲調の変化に驚きました。「ケルトとパンクの融合」という言葉に納得です／女の人の声がとても好きになった。”You were handsome”から”You were pretty”の男の人から女の人に変わるところなんか何だか凄い好き。後、”Well so could anyone”や最後の”ringing out for Christmas day”もとても好きな感じの歌い方だった。少し下町のイメージを浮かべた！すんごい貧しいわけではないけど、ほどほどの生活をしてる人達が元気にクリスマスを楽しもうとしている光景が頭に浮かんでくる。本当に楽しそうな人々をイメージする！／This is an exhilarating song. 声もすごく良い。歌は長いけど、厭きないし、聞いてて面白い。Duetになってる所がいい。歌詞も変わってて初めて知った言葉もたくさんあった／クリスマス・イブに訊きたいナンバー!!／ A very dreamful song. / 最初のコーラスの前後で、前が誉めている形容詞、後ろが罵倒していて面白かった／ What a nice Christmas song!/ 歌ってる人がコロコロ変わるのにびっくりした。This song is like an Irish folk song. The back music matches the Christmas mood./ とても楽しい感じがする。クリスマスが待ち遠しくなる。最初はゆっくりだったのに途中から早口になってビックリした／このメロディーさいこう！I love this song! The song made me happy./歌い方がもごもごしていて、（舌足らずというか…？）すごく聞き取りにくかった。“アメリカ”というものが聞き取れなかったのが残念だった／最初の歌のリズムからすごいにぎやかになっていくのがとてもおもしろい。何故けなしあっているのかわからなかった／普段聞かない単語が出てた。ちょっとdifficult. / This song is my favorite song, but I have not understood what it means.クリスマスが待ち遠しい／I felt the words of this song were difficult. 演奏している楽器がクリスマスっぽい陽気な感じで聞いてて楽しかった。なんで男と女で悪口を言い合っているのかいまいちわからないので気になる／The song is very strange. But I like it. I think that the man’s voice is peculiar. “You were handsome”と”You’re a bum”など昔の二人の若い頃を振り返っているのかなと思った／you’re bumやyou’re an old slut or junkなどは本気で言っているのではなく、酔っている勢いでふざけながら言っているような気がするI think “dreams” is key word./ 今年のクリスマスは朝から晩まで予備校なので切なくなった。I remembered a sparkling city of Christmas./ This song confused me. クリスマスを二人で祝っているのか、でも途中でケンカみたいなのをしていて、よくわからない／軽快なsong. I enjoyed listening to this song./ とてもノリの良い曲だと思う。陽気な感じがとても良かった。クリスマスの情景を思わせる。 I felt the view of Christmas Day by the song. / 最初はクリスマスの夜らしくちょっと神聖な感じがあるのに、途中からテンポが速くなってみんなで騒いでいる感じになるのがおもしろい。前半・後半どちらもクリスマスらしいところがある。This song is so fast that I couldn’t catch every word./ 歌詞が聞き取りにくかった。お互いのかけ合いみたいなところがおもしろかった。クリスマスの気分になった／最初のしっとりした感じが、陽気な感じに移るところがおもしろくて好き。イメージとしては寒い中、クリスマスパーティーに向かっていて（最初のしっとり）、パーティー会場に着くと、皆が快く歌いながら出迎えてくれたっていう感じ。When I heard this song, I was looking forward to Christmas this year./なんで途中でお互いに罵詈雑言を浴びせるのかが分からない。クリスマス直前のユーヨークの歌だと思う／クリスマスっぽい歌で愉快な気分になった。It was a Christmas song./歌う速さにギャップがあっておもしろいとおもった／速いし聞き取りにくい声だし全然分からなかった。 I thought winter is coming when I heard this song. / This song brings cheerfulness and gaiety. サビの部分が民俗の音楽のような雰囲気で、すごく不思議な曲だと思いました／声が聞きにくい、速い、どこを歌ってるかわからなくなる。”when all the dreams come true”の後の間奏がアイルランドの民謡みたいだった／It is too fast to catch the phrases. But I think this song seems to show that everybody enjoys Christmas day. / The Irish melody matched well with the song and the fast rhythm.／途中の二人の言い合いの時の速いテンポと落ち着いたテンポの二つがあって面白いし、いい感じだった。楽しんで歌えそう／聞き取りにくかったけど、楽しそうで、クリスマスの気分になれました。下品な言葉遣いも庶民的な感じがして良かった／第３段落からメロディーががらっと変わってすごい好きだった。少し早口で全然聞き取れなかった。I think that this song makes me happy./ ニューヨークならでは、はブロードウェイ？クリスマスにはどんな人でも夢を持ったりできるし、人を愛することもできるという感じがしました。This song sings for everybody./ ケルト風になる部分がかっこよかった。I like the part of the song where they play in the manner of Celt music./ 楽しそうで陽気なクリスマスを思い浮かべた／I like the rhythm from “you’re a bum….” Brooklyn… I like Manhattan the best.
Task 5. Noticing:
最後の所が良かったです／前回聞いたときよりも好きになっていた。初めての時は最初の男の人だけのPartは好きじゃなかったけど、今日はとても良かった。ここのpartがあってのこの曲だとさえ思えるようになった。１学期の”Leader of the band”みたいな感じに少し話がある感じの曲だと思う。最後はhappyで良かったと思う／お互いにののしりあってるのに、本当はすっごくお互いのこと思ってるのがすごく良い!!最後のところの女の人のこういう考え方ステキ／男性の気持ちと女性の気持ちとの掛け合いが歌の中にうまくフィットしていて面白い。I wish I could spend a Christmas Eve like this song./ A very unique lyrics. It looks like I’ve read a short story. / このような有様でも幸せなのかもしれない。I could have been someone too./ 二人の言い争いが面白い。女性の方はライブ盤より普通の方の人のが良い声出してる気がする／クリスマスの歌なのに、喧嘩する歌詞なのが面白いと思った。でも聞いてて楽しい気分になる曲／注で、怠け者、や、ふしだらな女、などといった言葉が出ていたので文句たらたらの歌かと思っていたけど、最後良い歌詞が出ていた／あかるいのにずいぶんとまたくらい内容の歌ですね…。最後に希望をおいてるったってねー、なおるわけじゃないし／男と女の両方の視点で歌っていて会話が成立していた／内容も濃く、段落１つずつの話がおもしろい。それにしてもののしり合ったりするすごいカップルだなぁ…。平和なクリスマスを過ごしたい…／出会って、言い合いもして、それでも互いを信じて夢を託し、愛し合っている…その話がクリスマスとうまく重なって素敵なラブストーリーになっているのだと気づいた／「こんなクリスマスは最後にしてくれ」という部分が何だか良いなあと思いました。I thought it’s a cheerful song. “our last”は聞き取れませんでした／話のように結末がきちんとあった。メロディーと歌詞のリズムが合っていた。ライブバージョンの方がもっと臨場感があってよかった。途中の言い合うところは劇みたいだった／歌詞が確定して、この歌がどうしようもない男の歌だということが分かりました。それでも女の人は一緒に居て、最後は希望が見えてきて終わったので一つの話になっていて面白いと思いました。男の人をどうしようもないと思いつつも、夢を託して頼っていて、男の人も女の人を必要としている。最後の部分がお気に入りです／時制の変化が沢山あったのが分かった。最後の終わり方が良い／クリスマスにぴったしの歌だと思う／少し男の惨めさが伝わりました。暖かいクリスマスを過ごしたいですね。聞き取りにくい部分もありました／結局この二人の関係がよく分からない。最後の部分で、階層から現在へ戻っているのに気づけなかった／今までの素直に「愛してるよ」って伝える曲と違って、けなし合うけど、その中に長年一緒にいた夫婦みたいな愛がある感じが良かった／歌詞の意味が分かって、すごくほほえましかった。色々言い合っているけど、二人はすごくお互い思い合っているんだなと思った。8番の “our last”は全然分からなかった。昔会った時から今まで、そして未来とストーリーになっていたのも良かった／二人が言い合っていても、本当はちゃんとお互いの事を考えてるし、思っている事が分かった。聖歌隊が言い合っているのではなく、最初に出てきた本人と彼女が言い合っているんだった／聞き取りがすごく難しかったです。内容も難しいです／始めと終わりは良い歌詞なのに、中間荒れてた。でも中間はクリスマスの雰囲気が引き立っていた。In the drunk tank an old … のところはすごいすき／結局お互い離れられないんだと思う／一番最後の部分で、”I’ve built my dreams around you”がとても好き。二人で夢を持って、希望の光がある感じがする。男性は優しい人のような気がする／男性と女性の掛け合いの意味が分かってちょっと面白いなと思った。聞き取りは全然あってなかった／すごく最後の部分がよかった。その前まで文句っぽかったのにやっぱりお互い相手のことを必要としている感じがよかったです。なんで、さいごのChorusがその前のとは違う感じに聞こえた／この歌はすっかり熟年の夫婦がお互いグチをいってせっかくのクリスマスにののしりあいながらも、なんだかんだで楽しんでいるのだと思った。純粋なクリスマスソングではないけれど、どこか暖かく親しみやすい／けなしたりしてるけど、最後はすごくよかった。過去と現在をいったりきたりしてて、過去形とか現在形とか全然気づけてなかった。”our last”が “a lost”って聞こえてた。まだまだ聞き取りできてないなあって思いました//カップルの歌だった。自信のあった歌詞がちがってショックだった。後半のchorusでstillが追加されていてすごく工夫されている歌詞だと思った／リズムが変わり明るくなったのだとばかり思っていたら実は“もううんざりだ”とか“もうこりごりだ”という意味が込められていたのでビックリした。もっと気楽なものだと思っていた。”Galway Bay”ってどんな歌でしたっけ？有名だったり？／歌詞が分かる前と後だと、歌としてのつながり具合がまったく違うなと思った。Ourとかstillが入るなんて全然分からなかったので残念だった。Ourが入るのが分かると、二人のlove songなんだなと改めて分かった／歌が現在に戻っているのに気づかなかった。汚い（？）言葉を使った後に言ってることがカッコ良かった。”Happy Christmas”を皮肉に使っているなんて思ってもみないコトだった／なんだかんだいっても、お互いが必要な存在なのだなと思いすてきな恋の歌だということに気づいた／なんだか陽気だったり、あまりきれいとはいえない言葉を使っているけど、内容はすごく深いんだなあって思った。After I know this song’s words, I came to like it. It’s funny./ 恋人どうしの歌だった。時間の流れを感じた。今まで想像していたのと意味が全然違っていたけど、すごい良い詩だった。昔はあんなにラブラブだったのに…みたいな感じだけど、結局態度に表さないだけで心の中では以前よりも深い絆があるんだなって思った／最後の10.の空所の部分がすごく素敵だと思った。I understood why these singers sang scandalous things to each other.プロポーズの歌なのかもと思った／途中ののの知り合いなどが入るけど、結局お互いのことを必要としている所がすごくいいと思った。最後のChorusにstillが入るのも象徴的だった／アイルランド人だからとか関係なく聞き取りにくかった。改めて聞いてみて、歌詞のすごさ思い知った。最初のサビまでの互いの愛が最後でまた復活しているのが感動的だった。I feel ashamed because I couldn7t understand how great this song is until I knew the whole song.／when I heard this song, I thought it strange. But now I think this song nice. ただお互いに好きで誉め合うばかりじゃなくて、嫌なところもあるけどやっぱり好きだというのが現実的で良いと思います／軽快な言い合いの後に、丸く収まると気持ちがいい／陽気で軽いだけの曲かと思ったら、お互いをけなし合ったり、大事に思ったり、かなり深みのある曲だと思った／歌詞が分かってスッキリした。とても良い曲だということが分かった／途中までとは違い、最後の部分はとても良い歌詞だった。何年もずーっと一緒にいるカップルの歌だと思った／男女の言い合い形式なのがおもしろい。途中でケンカしてるけど最後に男性が “I’ve built my dreams around you”と言うのも素敵♪／最後のサビでstillが入るのを気づかなかった。I like the last part where the man says “can’t make it all alone. I’ve built my dreams around you.”/ 歌が物語みたいになっていておもしろかった／歌詞が確定したあとまったく自分の想像していた歌とは違い色々な発見があり、良かったです／ののしりあってもやっぱりお互いが好きだというの良いなあと思った／１回目のコーラスの後からのストーリーの展開がすごく面白いなって思った。使っている言葉は下品だったりするけどすごい良い曲。この曲を聞いて単語１つ１つがすごく歌詞の中では大事なkey wordなんだと思った／最後にハッピーエンドで良かった。やっぱり２回目聞くとくせになる曲だなと思えた。男性の渋い声と女性の高く透明感のある声がよく合ってる／思っていた歌詞よりも奥深かった。I was surprised to find out the meaning of the sentences./ In the last chorus part, the word “still” came between the “were singing” part and I was able to notice that two choruses are different./ 二人がののしり合った後、結局いいないようになっていて良かった。内容が分かると最後の方の歌が暖かく感じた／気持ち悪いような率直なラブソングではなくて、のの知り合ったりしているので逆に仲良さそうだと思ったし、男性と女性が平等（対等？）な感じがした。日頃はきっといろんな悪いこともあると思うけど、クリスマスだからこそ、楽しんでいるのが伝わる／our last というマイナスのイメージがあったのにchorusからいいイメージの歌詞になって良いと思った。一人では生きていけないなんて、いいセリフだと思う／色々なことがあるけれど、お互いを必要としていてそれぞれが夢を持っているという感じがしました／時間の流れと心の動きが分かると感動的な曲の展開だと思えた／バカップルの歌だったのか。“聖歌隊の未だ変わらず歌い続けている”、ということに気付いた／Everyone seems to notice that someone is important after taking some distances.

When I first heard this album 17 (!) years ago, I was hooked. If you like rowdy music and dancing, you'll love the Pogues. I finally saw them in 1996 (minus Shane Mc) and it was still the best show I ever saw, though it took me a few days to recover. The title track, Bottle of Smoke, South Australia are great moshing tunes, but some of the most interesting songs for me include the instrumental Metropolitan and Fairytale of New York. I've been listening to this album for almost two decades and have never been bored. Not bad for something I bought totally by accident in 1988!
One can imagine seeing the singer in an Irish Bar with his mates drinking, playing music, and having a grand time. I love the book-let and the photos, font and the lay-out for it is simply put it grand. I love the clarity of the cover photo and the rest of the photos are also well done. Highly recommended indeed.
The lyrics are sheer poetry and encapsulate the Irish experience as no other modern Irish singer has managed to do.
This album was first shown to me by my high school band teacher, and thank god he did. He opened my eyes to a totally cool band with probably one of the most revolutionary sounds to ever hit the earth. Traditional sounds with pounding energy and extremely poetic lyrics, MacGowan and the rest of the Pogues deliver a sensational album. I just warn about not playing it in front of little kids, as some of the songs are a little suggestive for their age group. But all that aside, this album is one that shines above many and joins the rank of "CD that never leaves the player."
This is Celtic music with an edge...lovely and razor sharp all at once...buy it and enjoy over a dirty pint of Guinness and a sip of Bushmill's.
The best feature of this new compilation album, is the bonus live CD of the Pogues in 2001, at London's Brixton Academy. This live album showcases the amazing energy that made the Pogues such an exciting live act in the first place, even Shane seems up to task as well. When listening to this CD, I felt that I was actually there, man what a feeling!!!!!

Comment: Just as most of the Christmas songs are, it is cheerful and happy if you just listen to the music. The couple might not be satisfied with each other, but it is sweet how the man says he kept their dreams./ It’s important to see the sequence of tenses./ Now I feel that this song is heartwarming. Even though they aren’t exactly how they used to be, I like how the man kindly sings about their dreams. / This song illustrates both good situations and bad situations./ This song teaches me how to change human’s sentiment. The lyrics have a deep meaning. I can imagine snow./ “Noisy, uncomfortable, dirty.” This sis my first impression for this Christmas song, But I didn’t dislike this. New form of Christmas song that ought to be holy./ I want to dance with the music./ The first part of this song is quiet and full of love./ He remembered what they has been through because he felt nostalgic about the past./ Both of them are looking back on their past, and they are arguing about where their dream had gone. As a conclusion, they found out that they still had their dreams, though./ I didn’t know here have been such a cool phrase, “you promised me Broadway was waiting for me.” I want to use the same some day./ The song sounds like a musical. It is a very rhythmical song, and makes us fun./ I thought that he remembered when they were happy. They love each other in spite of the swearing they use./ This song is coming and going with this couple’s memories./ The lyrics were not very fine, but we can feel fun when we listen to the song. We can feel a strong affinity between them./ The last half of the song is rhythmical and cheerful. Although the couple seem to be made for each other, they probably get to swear about each other./ The couple had a quarrel over small things, but they cherish each other. I’m interested in how “now” and “then” are in contrast./ Pretty. They argue violently, however, they are getting along very well with each other after all. The chemistry between them is very nice and that makes this song heartwarming. / Conversation between the man and the woman is very interesting because we usually can’t hear the slung in English lessons at school. It is difficult catch the lyrics because for some part the music is slow and for other parts it is very fast./ This song is about Christmas, one of the most important memories for the man and the woman. Christmas reminds them of memories of the life they have shared./ The word is dark. I don’t understand why they sing this song merrily./ My impression of this song is meeting and parting./ The part I’m most interested in is where they call each other’s name. Finally, the man and the woman share a Happy Christmas!!/ When this couple was young, they loved each other. They have got old, it seems that they are not friendly, but in fact, they still love each other from the bottom of their heart./ I think it is a sweet song, because even though the two people are bashing each other, I think they are still very much in love. It portrays the couple who can’t get along but are still very much in love./ The man and the woman married on Christmas and couldn’t get along with each other. However, the man wanted to tell his wife that he didn’t forget the happiest time before the marriage, at the end of this song. The song includes the satire on the man himself. / I thought this couple really loves each other. Maybe their lives aren’t going so well. Both of them must have faults but I think they love each other, including those faults. The lyrics are unique. But behind the funny words, I felt the true love. I really think they love each other./ I thought that the song is written about lovers who are not friendly now. This song is now my favorite one. I believe there is love which will never change./ I feel this song has vigor. / Even after the man was sent to a jail, he was still caring about the woman. The woman is angry at the man for taking her dream away. But he never cares about her words because he has kept the dreams./ The mood of the up tempo part of this song is shiny. The slow part is very cold and lonely. / It’s a very pleasant song. He remembers the past, and it was a good thing for him. The man still loves the woman. But the woman seems out of patience with him. There is some misunderstanding between them./ This song is energetic and has gigantic power. The song drew me into the word of the song. The expression for Blank 10 is nice and cool.
noticing: It is not decorated, so I like the one. The love which is formed differently than the ordinary couples is also good./ I found that the tense is very important, so I have to check it from now on. The man in this song looks back on the past time when he and the woman he has loved lived together. / Their relationships changed. It’s interesting. / I thought that he irritated and he became sentimental. I was surprised at many invectives./ Why is the man in the tank at the beginning? This song tells me that this man still loves this woman./ I think this song is about a couple who married in the old time. Nowadays, they are abusing each other but I think their love are still alive./ The lyrics seemed dirty but showed kindness and love to each other. The small change of words in the chorus was good. It clearly showed that the two were still in love with each other,./ I feel long term of love vaguely. I was not fully aware of the lyrics, but this duet is pleasant to me./ This song has a different type of structure from what I have listened so far. This song is more like a conversation than a poem. / I think an old couple who is sung in the song has not changed their feelings and they will be happy forever./ I feel sadness when I hear the music in the first part./ I was surprised that the last chorus part changed. The lyrics are interesting because they blend the past, the present and the future./ There are both lonely and happy emotions on Christmas Eve. I thought that the heroine is lonely and she remembers the old happy Christmas Eve. However, she finally realizes that Christmas Eve never changes just as their love has never changed. / Although they have many problems, they are happy. Their situation has changed, but their happiness is going on, I think. It is beautiful love./ I feel a sociable atmosphere and a peaceful world. / Irish songs make me happy, so I like them./ The lyrics in the song have meaningful depth. I was very surprised at the change from the slow into the fast tempo./ I felt a sense of mortality from this song. They love each other once, but now they are breaking up./ My impression of the song is both happy and sad, and I am looking forward to Christmas this year./ Even though the lyrics were a bit sad and sentimental, I like the rhythm of this song. I pity the man and the woman in this song. / A little happiness that lies in our daily life is worth enjoying. / I felt that they were so much in love with each other in their mind. / Although this song has a lot of swearing, it doesn’t sound dirty or vulgar. This has become one of my favorite Christmas songs./ I didn’t like the way he pronounced words. The song sounds warm. / Though this song has very serious meaning and irony about their future, I feel it very comic and affectionate. I can imagine how this tow people argue with each other for the future. This sounds like a musical, so I can hear it pleasantly./ They were successful and happy once, so they could feel happy Christmas then. But now, they don’t feel happy with each other and they feel hatred in Christmas time./ It seems that they often quarrel, but they are a really lovely couple./ I felt a great homesick from people who are living in a cozy life of their brilliant past. / The song sings about what lovers were and how they are with nostalgia. They have been holding memories to share. / I think this couple feels great love of each other. This is a very beautiful song for Christmas. I like this./ They are quarreling, but they have a strong tie between them. This is a song about “Happy Christmas”. / They seemed to trust each other. Therefore, they can quarrel. Even of they have difficulties, they can get along. I didn’t notice that the chorus part was changed It expresses that they can be together in the future. / It sounds very lively. It made me think of an old couple who are arguing. Although they are complaining about each other, it seems that they still care about each other. It brings out a happy Christmas atmosphere./ I thought that they would finally make it up./ The man and the woman must be together now. It was difficult for me to understand how tenses work. The song depicts a happiness of Christmas and consequence of each one of the couple. / I feel as if I was seeing a Broadway musical. It is quiet in some part, pot in other and it has a part of conversation of swearing./ I think it’s a common story. They haven’t succeeded, but the man never gives up their dreams. I think we can have hope when we hear this song. This song expresses what life they have lived and how nice characters they have. / I can feel that the man wants to say many things about the past though they are happy at last. /
